‘Industry champion’ Markey becomes ISBA president

pete markeyBoots CMO Pete Markey, aurguably one of the best known marketing chiefs in the UK, if not Europe, has taken up the role of president of ISBA, after serving as vice-president five years and being a member of the industry body for the majority of his career.

Prior to his current role at Boots, Markey held senior leadership roles at TSB, Aviva, the Post Office, RSA and More Th>n, having started his early career at One.Tel, the AA and British Gas; he has always specialised in data and analytics, and customer experience.

Within his current role, Markey and his team have established Boots Media Group, which enables brands to deliver marketing campaigns to Boots customers. He is also the executive sponsor for Boots Marketing for Change initiative and the Boots Pride network.

Earlier this year, Markey became chair of the Advertising Association’s Front Foot network and most recently received an honorary doctorate in Business from Solent University, Southampton in recognition of his career in marketing.

As president of ISBA, he will chair the ISBA Council. Made up of CMOs from the ISBA membership, the Council oversees the business of ISBA and contributes to the setting of the ISBA priorities. Markey will work closely with ISBA director general Phil Smith and his team to provide counsel.

He takes over the role from NatWest CMO Margaret Jobling,who has served as president for the last two years.

Phil Smith said: “Marg has been a fantastic president. She has led the Council with confidence and warmth ensuring all voices are heard. Her vocal support for Origin has been invaluable in driving the adoption of new stakeholders.”

Markey commented: “Throughout my career, ISBA has been a constant presence, providing guidance, best practice and offering me the opportunity to share challenges and solutions with my peers. I am very proud to be assuming the role as president.”

Smith concluded: “I am thrilled Pete agreed to become our new president. He has always flown the flag for ISBA and supported our priorities and is the perfect person to lead ISBA into its 125th year.”
