The Spag Bol Project, the charity set up late last year to help tackle homelessness, is leaving no stone unturned in its quest to wrest cash off consumers with a call to all lovers to rein in excessive romantic gestures this Valentine’s Day and donate the money instead.
The charity opened its doors in December 2019 with a mission to help fight the growing problem of homelessness while also cutting food waste. The scheme asked consumers to make a simple sacrifice: cut back on the extravagance of Christmas dinner and donate the cash saved to charity.
The Spag Bol Project – which is initially supporting Centrepoint, Crisis and The Salvation Army – has now turned its attention to Valentine’s Day.
The persistent problem of homelessness means society needs to continually find solutions all year round. The idea, analogous to the Christmas campaign, is to donate the money that could be saved by buying cheaper gifts, or forgoing a meal, on February 14 to the organisation’s homeless charity partners.
Spag Bol Project founder Bill Portlock, who is CEO of London-based data science consultancy Marketing Metrix, said: “As a nation we over-indulge not only at Christmas, but throughout the year. That is why The Spag Bol Project is proudly announcing its support towards reducing spend on Valentine’s Day. Cutting out or reducing expenditure will help improve the quality of life for those in need of housing during the coldest month of the year.
“With the price of flowers almost doubling on the day, simply save the money and donate some or all of it to charity. To help further, instead of breaking the bank for an expensive meal, just cook a simple meal for two, saving lots of money – which could help others in this tough period.”
