Is your gran tossing and turning?

So, how did your street party go then? The kings and queens of this wonderful industry were in full swing last Friday by the time I got round to the DM cul-de-sac, although probably the less said about that the better. Still, at least they didn’t stoop to the tacky lows of the DMA Summer Lunch a few years back and hire Royal lookalikes (whose idea was that one, again…not yours was it Janet?).
Suffice to say, most people at the street party looked like they’d had their lips round more than the Royal Ring; even Bunting and Fairy Cake seemed quite shocked, gasping that “the Borgias had nothing on this lot”. Mind you, the same could probably be said of that DMA Summer Lunch after-party at Chez Gerard in Covent Garden. Oh happy days, makes me feel I’m getting old…
Talking of getting old, did you see those lovely people at Mumsnet – the self-appointed moral crusaders who have the ear of every politician and the sex appeal of a dead fish – are now launching a site called Gransnet, for yes, you guessed it grannies? Always eager to spot a fresh marketing opportunity for you guys, I thought I’d check it out to see whether this was a potential goldmine for brand owners.
One very exciting forum was entitled “Knitting down the generations”, under which was the following entry (and I kid you not):
“The first garment I knitted for my grandson used the same pattern as the first one I knitted for his mother, thirty years ago! And I have made him at least one other sweater, if not two others, that I made her. And all the little girls in my family have had a knitted angel top that I found in a magazine many, many years ago – it’s so pretty and useful, all my nieces have worn theirs until they dropped. If I ever have a granddaughter, it will be the first thing I make for her!”
Riveting stuff, hey, and you thought DecisionMarketing was boring? With thorny issues like that keeping them awake all night, it’s no wonder they need a forum to pour out their woes, but unless you work at the Wool Marketing Board, I reckon this could be barren territory…
Finally, I am beginning to wonder whether I am the most unlucky man alive. As you can no doubt tell, I spend a lot of time on this bloody laptop but I am starting to pay the price, having now had my personal details stolen from Sony PlayStation Network, Sony Online Entertainment, Play.com, TripAdvisor, M&S and even Mothercare (don’t ask).
Those pesky data thieves will be having a field day with my bank details; I wish them all the best in trying to extract any money out of my account, though, bearing in mind I am still waiting to get paid by the powers that be (Enough already, the cheque is in the post – Ed).
